Empty Bowls event to aid soup kitchen

When Nashua High School South teachers Judy Loftus and Ann Wagner started a food pantry at the school four years ago, they had no idea how quickly the school community would embrace the project.Today, not only do more students, teachers and their families use the pantry than ever before, the support from school staff has also grown. Empty Bowls has been a staple at Nashua South for nearly 20 years.Organized by visual arts director Robin Peringer, the event brings students and staff together to make more than 700 stoneware bowls each year. Each February, hundreds of community members gather for the event to purchase the bowls and use them to sample soup from various city restaurants."It's grown to where the community really understands what we're doing," Peringer said. "And the students understand that they're helping Nashua as a whole. It's great community service."Empty Bowls aims to bring awareness to the many city families with empty bowls on their tables and raise money for the organizations that support those families, particularly the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter.
